Another Day Down

Well, I’ve now made it through 2 days of school. I had my marketing class today, and I think I will like it. The teacher has done a lot of marketing consulting in industry, so she has a lot of experiences and excitement about it. I think I will actually enjoy most of my classes, although some more than others.
While trying to think about what to write about today, I asked Kristine what she thought. She gave me a bunch of ideas that ranged from how Jayden (our son) can roll over, but only from his back to his front, to how the potatoes and broccoli were undercooked at dinner tonight. Although her ideas were great, I decided I would share an experience of how spending the time to go through formalities may be worth your time.
The other day I realized that I did not receive some scholarship money for school that I thought I would have. I then promptly realized that since I’m taking a lighter class load, I no longer qualified for the money. Well as you can imagine, money is kind of important to a small family like ours. I had read that I could fill out a contract since it was my last semester that meant I no longer needed to reach the hour minimum and they would give me the correct portion of the scholarship. So I walked to the building that was directed on my letter and found a sign that said to go up to the room upstairs where it could be taken care of. I went up and saw a sign that sent me back to a building that I had just walked past. Trying not to be bugged because I should have know thats where I had to go at the beginning of school, I headed over there. When I finally found my way to the room, the line for financial stuff was way, way, long… I turned around and left. I thought “It is probably too late to get the money anyway – they probably canceled my scholarship when I didn’t meet the hours.” I walked down the hall, got a drink, and then decided that then was the best time to take care of the problem. To make a long story short – this lady went down the line seeing if she could help us instead of us having to stand in line, and she directed me to a guy with the form that I filled out, dropped in a box, and today I got $925 deposited in my account. Therefore, in just 20 mins yesterday I made $925. That’s $2775 an hour if I could keep that up! 🙂
To contrast this, I want to supplement it with an experience at the bookstore. (the super short version) Went in, found book, super long lines, decided at worst I would lose $20 if I had to end up buying it new instead of used, put book back, came home, went back this morning, had a used copy of book paid for in less than 15 mins. I guess sometimes it pays to wait on things, and sometimes its better to just do it then. Either way, do what you feel is the best thing. In the scholarship experience, I knew it was too much money to risk losing that I had to give it a shot, while the book was only $20. I know that $20 is a lot, and if we lost $20 everyday we would be out $7300 in a year, however I also knew that if it took me 2 hours to buy the book, my time is often worth more than $10 an hour to me.
